At Burro Beach
the man in a
tattered panama
shades himself
under an empty
lifeguard stand.

An easel before him,
he paints back
his youth;
a girl with
butterscotch hair
and nutmeg eyes.

Out of an emerald grotto
she leans forward,
breast bare,
smiling into the weary eyes
of the trembling
old artist.
